About Subject Areas
The Subject Area groups the topics being setup for migration of data. The Subject Area is defined within the Project Setup to store the Working database and datastore the Project and Release. An example of a subject area is FIN or Finance where the data objects included would be GL Accounts, Cost Centers, Profit Centers. Each of these objects contains multiple tables and columns of data that make up a Dataset Design. Together the Dataset Design and the Subject Area organize the data for assignment to a Project and Release.
View the following page by navigating to one of these pathways from the Syniti Construct Homepage:
Catalog > Dataset Design
Administer > Setup > Guided Setup
Within Dataset Design, access the Subject Area data in the left side panel of the Dataset Design page.
Note
The count of rows for the panel is displayed within parenthesis next to the panel title.

Within the Subject Area, there is a list of subjects that have been added with the description. The Subject Area grid displays the following:
Heading | Definition |
---|---|
Name | The name for the process area for associated business objects. (Ex: OTC, MDM) |
Description | The description of the subject area. |
Is Migration Specific | Check box to show that this subject area is relevant for Migration use. |
Owner | The stakeholder assigned as Owner for this subject area. |
Sliding Divider Bar
Throughout the Migration system, pages will provide the ability to move the divider bar between panels for a Vertical break or Horizontal break.
As one example of this benefit, Dataset Design provides the user ability to move or slide the vertical page break from left to right and back.
Refer to section Migration User Interface > Menu Structure for more details of this benefit.
Add a Subject Area
Click the Add icon to open a new Subject Area. The Subject Area details provide for description, Stakeholders and Attributes. The lists of associated Datasets is contained within a tab of the Subject Area page.

See below for field definitions for the Subject Area:
Section | Field | Definition |
---|---|---|
Details | Name* | The name of the Subject Area for all related business process area objects (Required) |
Details | Description | The description of the subject area |
Details | Active | Toggle for status of the Subject Area for future-state design mapping and migration.
|
Details | Is Migration Specific | Toggle to mark record as relevant for Migration for internal object types that should not be included in the project metrics. See Note below.
|
Stakeholders | Owner* | Enter the value into the field for the person responsible for this object type. This section is configurable - See Stakeholder Details |
Attributes | Various | This section is configurable - See Attribute Details. If the section is listed, enter the resulting value into the fields provided.
|
Audit | Various | These fields are all display only and are updated by actions |
The Is Migration Specific Toggle - Visible within the Subject Area Details,Dataset Details and Data Element Details of the Syniti Migrate system. These toggles mark the object type as active for internal Migration Project team use such as Central Wave or Relevancy Targets. They are toggled as active to be excluded from the overall Migrate metrics calculations and to appear as if they are not "In Scope" objects for the Project.
When finished with edits, click the Save icon to complete.
Central Wave Subject Areas
Central Wave depends on creating a Subject Area and Datasets specific to "Central Relevancy". These are Migration only objects similar to the Migration Data Elements that are mapped to determine the relevancy of objects like Sales Orders or Purchase Orders. These are not relevant to the Dataset Designer (if they are the SI who's concern is for the objects loading data).
These Central Wave Subject Areas do not display in Dataset Design like the normal datasets. The Migration flag assists with Security to make them hidden from Designers who do not need this information. These Migration toggled Subject Areas are also excluded from all the Metrics.
Edit a Subject Area
From the multi-panel page, you can edit a subject area by clicking on the Edit icon. The Subject Area details may be changed as well as modifying the Datasets from this page.

When finished with edits, click the Save icon to complete.
Delete a Subject Area
Once a Dataset has been assigned to a Subject Area the link makes it not possible to delete the Subject Area. In this case, within the details of the Subject Area, mark it as Active = off toggle. However, if the Subject Area contains no other links or connections then it may be deleted and removed from the system. In this case, click the Delete icon and then click the OK button to proceed.

Should the Subject Area have links that prevent abiltiy to delete, the following Error message will display. Click OK to exit without any changes, and mark the record as Inactive.

Subject Areas within Guided Setup
As part of a guided setup wizard, the Subject Areas are created as Step 4 of the overall process. The Subject Area tab is the same list of rows that are viewed when using the pathway for Datasets.
