Overview
Replicate Preview enables efficient data movement to and from Microsoft Fabric, allowing Fabric to be configured as either a scalable source or target for analytical workloads. Users can quickly define replication pipelines by selecting source tables and configuring Warehouse or SQL database targets, with metadata automatically scanned and cataloged. The platform simplifies pipeline creation while ensuring consistent and reliable data delivery with minimal setup and operational overhead.
Note
Fabric is currently supported as both a source and target endpoint in Replicate Preview, limited to Snapshot (full load) replication mode, with Change Data Capture (CDC) and streaming replication not yet supported.
Prerequisites
The following steps must be completed before using the Fabric datastore as a source or target:
Ensure that you register a Microsoft Entra app for Fabric and create a service principal with a client secret.
Ensure that the required users are assigned appropriate workspace roles and granted required item permissions. Refer to the User Permissions section below.
Use the registered Entra app and service principal to create a Fabric datastore connection and assign Metadata Scanning and Cloud Replication usage types. Refer to Create a Connection and Connecting to Microsoft Fabric for more information.
If you are using this connection as a source, run a scan to ingest metadata from this connection's objects into the SKP.
User Permissions
When using Fabric as a source, users running replications need at least the Viewer workspace role. For targets, assign at least the Contributor role. Refer to the Permission model external article for detailed workspace role information.
To access individual items, grant the required permissions on Warehouse, Lakehouse, and SQL database items in Fabric:
Source: Read permissions
Target: Write permissions
Refer to the following external articles for more information on sharing item-level permissions:
Next Steps
In Replicate Preview, configure your workspace using this system datastore and start replicating data. Refer to Configure Workspace: Datastores for more information.
