Datasets, Terms, and Rules

Prev Next

Overview

To better manage rules, terms, and datasets, we have introduced an update to the use of business concepts (terms) on rules. Business concepts on rules will soon be updated to be classified as datasets, instead of as a business term.

Refer to the Additional Notes below for details on any necessary user actions associated with this change.

Details

Term Types

Terms now have a Type field with options of Term or Dataset. Selecting the Term type categorizes the asset as a business term, a definition that can be tagged or associated with other assets. Selecting the Dataset type indicates that the term represents a business concept or a data object that can be measured.

Term Type Field

Existing terms with a rule applied will be automatically assigned the dataset type while existing terms without a rule applied have been assigned the term type. With a future update, a dataset asset will be created for any term associated with a rule.

Business Concepts/Datasets on Rules

Currently, on the Create Rule and Edit Rule pages, a term is selected from the Business Concepts field. With this change, the Business Concepts (term) field has been replaced with a direct link to a dataset. This allows you to select datasets against which the rule will run. Rules will no longer run against term assets. This is reflected in both Syniti Orchestrate and in Data Quality Dashboards.

Additional Notes

With the introduction of the Type field on the Add Term and Edit Term pages, all existing terms have been automatically assigned the dataset or term type. Terms with a rule applied have been assigned the dataset type, while terms without a rule applied have been assigned the term type. This was an automatic change with this update and no user action is required.

As we transition from using business terms to datasets, Syniti recommends that rules be run against datasets, not terms. With the introduction of this feature, reviewing terms to determine that each term is categorized with the correct term type is not required. Overall functionality has not changed; however, it is helpful to understand these rules will soon move from terms as a business concept to true datasets. If a term type needs to be updated, simply edit the term and select the correct option from the Type field.

We will continue to communicate changes around this feature as they are developed. Please refer to our release notes regularly for updates.
