Prerequisites to Adding the Development Area
Within Project Setup the linkage of Subject Area to Development Area and Working Datastore is critical to downstream processes like mapping, rule building, and SAP Data Services XML builds. The Subject Area and Development Area should be setup as part of the initial project setup but may be added as needed prior to the Project Setup. Refer to section Guided Setup for steps to maintain the following prerequisites:
Setup the Parameters details to designate the ETL Tool for use in the project within Administer > Setup > Parameters.
Create the Subject Area within Administer > Setup > Subject Areas.
Create the Development Area within Administer > Setup > Development Areas.
Each Subject Area is assigned to a Working Datastore within the ETL, if the ETL Tool = SAP Data Services as well as a Development Area. The Working Instance runs the rules and reports for this conversion of data in the database system assigned (Ex: DEV or LOAD Environment). The Working Datastore indicates the datastore that handles external ETL processing and it needs to be setup manually within the ETL tool. The same name may be assigned to both.
Note
Should the ETL Tool within Administer > Setup > Parameters details page be set to Syniti Migrate (internal ETL Tool), the field for Working Datastore is hidden in the Development Area panel to prevent confusion as it does not apply, otherwise this field is set as required for ETL Tools = SAP Data Services.
On the Project Setup multi-panel page, the Development Areas panel is in the lower right of the Project Setup page. One or more Subject Areas may be assigned to a Project / Release.
Development Areas when using external ETL Tool
The list of active Subject Areas and the associated Development Areas and Working Datastores that have been added are on the Subject Areas panel. The panel displays the following:
Heading | Definition |
---|---|
Subject Area* | Name of the Subject Area for Project / Release. |
Development Area* | Name of the working instance to which a database management environment is linked and where ETL processing will occur. (Required) |
Working Datastore* | Name of the Data Services Datastore to which the working database is linked and where ETL processing metadata is located. |
Add a Development Area
On the Development Area panel, click the Add icon to launch the Development Area window. Field Working Datastore is contingent upon the ETL Tool assigned to the Release. If the ETL Tool = SAP Data Services, then the Working Datastore field will display, otherwise, it is hidden.
See below for field definitions for adding a Development Area:
Field | Definition |
---|---|
Subject Area* | Select the name of the Subject Area for Project / Release from the drop-down list. (Required) |
Development Area* | The Development Area setup to store the Environments Datasources. (Required) |
Working Datastore* | Name of the Data Services Datastore to which the working database is linked and where ETL processing metadata is located. (Required) |
When finished with edits, click the Save icon to complete.
Edit a Development Area
Once the Development Area has been created, the Development Area and the Working Datastore need to be created in the database system and ETL tool. These are prerequisites to running the build System Views process. Each Development Area uses "Pass Thru Views" of the Target system check table data in the process of running rules and reports against migration data. Refer to section Migrate > System Views for more details of building out the System Views for data migration.
If the Development Area and Working Datastore need to be changed, the user may Edit the Development Area panel to update these fields and save upon completion.
Note
If the Working Datastore field is hidden, then the ETL Tool = Syniti Migrate for this Release.
When finished with edits, click the Save icon to complete.
Subsequent Tasks
Once the Development Area is assigned, the Mapping process may begin. Each Release of the Project requires assignment of a Development Area in order for the Dataset to be available for import to the Release in Mappings.
Also, the user should review the Development Area to ensure that it is built as expected. Click on MANAGE DATASOURCES button to open the page for Migration Working Databases.
